RECOGNIZED ASCA MODEL PROGRAM

RECOGNIZED ASCA MODEL PROGRAM

In April 2019, Capistrano Valley High School was awarded RAMP designation for their comprehensive school counseling program!

The American School Counselor Association (ASCA) promotes student success by expanding the image and influence of school counseling through leadership, advocacy, collaboration and systemic change. ASCA helps school counselors guide their students toward academic achievement, career planning and social/emotional development to help today’s students become tomorrow’s productive, contributing members of society.

Each year ASCA reviews school’s Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP)applications and assesses them in 12 different program areas. The RAMP designation recognizes schools that are committed to delivering an exemplary comprehensive school counseling program and are awarded for aligning their program with the criteria in the ASCA National Model, a framework for comprehensive, data-driven school counseling.

A model school counseling program must adhere to a multi-tier, multi-domain system of support, where services and programs are developed based on student needs in three main areas: academic, social/emotional, and college and career. Not only does a model program address these three areas of student development, but they must also provide support through a three-tiered system:

  • Tier 1: All students--classroom guidance lessons and access to school wide activities
  • Tier 2: Some students-- targeted interventions such as small group counseling
  • Tier 3:  Few students--Individual counseling and individual support plans for students' physical and mental disabilities

Nationwide, more than 820 schools have been designated as RAMP recipients since 2004. Prior to this year, only eleven schools in California earned the RAMP designation. For the 2018-19 school year, Capistrano Valley High School was the ONLY high school awarded the RAMP designation in California for their school counseling program! RAMP designation is valid for 5 years. The school counseling teams collaborated with administrators, school counselor interns, the district lead counselor and the school counseling advisory council, throughout the implementation and evaluation of our school counseling programs and spent many hours completing the extensive RAMP application to demonstrate how leadership, collaboration, and advocacy, created systematic change for students’ benefit.
